When you\u2019re looking to print photos, you\u2019ll often have a choice to make when it comes to finish: glossy or matte. The same holds true for a variety of printed marketing products \u2013 from business cards and labels to table tents, hang tags, and rack cards, you\u2019ll often be able to select either a glossy or matte finish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which finish you choose is primarily an aesthetic preference. And while it\u2019s true that you really can\u2019t go \u201cwrong\u201d with either finish, there are some practical considerations to keep in mind when making that glossy-or-matte choice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In this Signage 101<\/a> blog, we\u2019ll examine those considerations and see if we can help you determine what finish might work best for your sign, photo, or other marketing piece.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Becoming Glossy or Matte<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ever wonder just how a paper or other substrate gets to be glossy or matte in the first place? As it turns out, there are two primary ways to achieve a glossy or matte finish:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u25cf A paper or substrate has the finish \u201cbaked in\u201d \u2013 The specific gloss or matte finish is achieved when the paper or substrate receives a chemical coating during the manufacturing process. The finish and smoothness (texture) will also be affected as the substrate is then passed through hard-pressure rollers (\u201ccalenders\u201d); basically, the more or better calenders it\u2019s run through, the more glossy it will become.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u25cf A finish is added with a coating post-print \u2013 Print providers like Signs.com can also add a coating after the piece has been printed, typically to add extra gloss (although there are also matte and semi-gloss coatings as well, depending upon the print provider\u2019s machinery roster).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It doesn\u2019t truly matter how the gloss or matte effect is added \u2013 either up front or on the \u201cback\u201d end; the results will be similar.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Glorious Glossy<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Think \u201cbright,\u201d \u201creflective,\u201d and visual \u201cpop\u201d when you\u2019re considering a glossy finish, and you\u2019re on the right track for this smooth effect. Glossy works especially well with images (versus lots of text), especially high-contrast images.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A glossy finish provides not only vivid colors, but also rich blacks and a luxurious feel.<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Glossy\u2019s other attributes include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Vivid colors:<\/strong> It sounds like a clich\u00e9, but you will indeed get redder reds, bluer blues, greener greens, etc. with a glossy finish. That glossy finish will make all of your colors seem to burst from the photo or sign.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Richest blacks:<\/strong> A glossy finish will also result in your print\u2019s blacks being more impactful \u2013 a pure, deep black that you\u2019ll never confuse with gray.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Low-light friendly:<\/strong> Because a glossy finish will be highly reflective \u2013 especially under direct lighting \u2013 this finish does its best work in low-light settings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Equating to luxurious, prosperous<\/strong>: For many, a glossy look visually feels like something that\u2019s inherently valuable and expensive, and is something to be kept or treasured (versus tossed into the nearest circular file). Glossy carries a \u201cmodern\u201d feel to it as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Marvelous Matte<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

When it comes to a matte finish, two descriptors that likely come to mind are \u201cflat\u201d and \u201csoft.\u201d A matte finish works very well with low-contrast or muted images \u2013 those without a lot of difference between the darks and the lights.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Avoid smudges, fingerprints, and reflections with a matte finish.<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Other advantages of a matte finish include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Fingerprint avoidance<\/strong> \u2013 Matte\u2019s ability to ward off fingerprint smudges is particularly important when it comes to photographic prints.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Reflection protection<\/strong> \u2013 Matte is the best choice for displaying under bright lights because a flat finish won\u2019t offer any reflections, unlike its glossy counterpart. Even under glass, a matte finish will still fend off reflections.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Accentuating image details<\/strong>: The matte finish will naturally allow the eye to see more detail in an image, and not be so visually \u201cchallenged\u201d by a shiny gloss finish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Write-ability<\/strong> \u2013 If you want someone to be able to write on the printed product with a pen \u2013 think business cards, for instance \u2013 then matte should be your choice. Ink smudges more easily on a glossy finish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

That \u201cartsy\u201d feel<\/strong> \u2013 A matte finish will help a black-and-white image maintain an artistic aesthetic. Matte also works nicely with sepia-tone and historic images.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Semi-Gloss, Metallic, and More<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If you\u2019re reading this blog and wondering, \u201cBut aren\u2019t there more finish choices beyond glossy and matte?\u201d the answer is yes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Semi-gloss<\/strong> is the \u201cin-between\u201d finish \u2013 not quite as glossy as glossy, but glossier than matte. You might see it referred to as \u201cluster,\u201d \u201csatin,\u201d \u201cpearl,\u201d or any of half-a-dozen other names by print providers, photo houses, and even the paper producers themselves. Alas, there\u2019s no industry-wide agreement on any of these terms, nor on just what constitutes \u201csemi-gloss.\u201d But, generally, all of these terms point to a texture somewhere between glossy and matte, with the final texture varying by paper\/substrate and finish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One other texture to highlight here: Metallic.<\/strong> The metallic effect is typically the result of a metallic layer (usually a polyester film such as Mylar) placed between the paper or substrate and a glossy coating. The result: a metallic look and pearl-like appearance to the printed image, with colors that really pop. The paper itself will be more durable than standard glossy or matte paper because of the metallic layer; but keep in mind that the glossy coating will not deter fingerprints. Ideally, prints on metallic paper will display best under good lighting \u2013 prints placed under dim lights won\u2019t achieve the full metallic effect you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
